What is the definition of a Disinfectant?

Both Benefect and PureGreen24 are classified as “broad spectrum” disinfectants.

The EPA’s definition of a “broad spectrum” disinfectant is one that has shown to kill all three of the major classes of organisms:

Bacteria – kills both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, including: Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella cholerasuis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Fungi – kills at least one pathogenic fungi

Viruses – kills pathogenic viruses
(Sanitizers are not broad spectrum since they are only meant to reduce bacteria levels.)

They all must submit successful kill data against the following organisms within a standard contact time of 10 minutes. The equivalent to over 99.99% reduction is required for disinfectant registration.

Comments on the EPA and “Green” Disinfectants

It is true that the US EPA does not certify any product as being a “green disinfectant”. Also, there is no true definition as to what a “green” product really means and needs to be. However, it is certainly true that there are a few new products recently approved by the EPA as disinfectants like Benefect and PureGreen 24 that are indeed much safer to use and more friendly to the environment that traditional products which use harsher ingredients.
