Working with cleaners that contain acid is no fun. You have to put on rubber gloves, a mask and goggles to protect yourself. Plus, acid-based products can damage gel-coat. We're always on the lookout for more environmentally friendly substitutes for toxic cleaners.
And we came across one called Mineral-O-Magic, which is manufactured by Prime Filters, Inc., a company in the Netherlands that makes air and water filters in addition to natural cleaning products. Mineral-O-Magic, which contains no abrasives, harsh chemicals or acids, removes "hard-water and rust stains quickly, easily and safely," according to the company.
Directions state there is no need for gloves or a mask. You apply the rust-colored liquid to the stain, wait one to 10 minutes, wipe or rush off, and rinse with water.
We tried Mineral-O-Magic on a rust-stained section of a swim ladder on one of our test boats. The stain covered a portion of the ladder's SS rail and one of the hard-plastic steps. The product worked well, removing just about all of the stain.

Label Lingo
Figuring out whether a cleaning product is safe for you and the environment can be difficult. Manufacturers are not required by law to disclose ingredients. To help, here are definitions of terms you're likely to encounter when shopping. Your safest bet is to buy from companies that list all ingredients on their labels.
|
Term |
What it Means | The Bottom Line |
|
Bio-Degradable |
The product will break down over time into harmless materials. | Doesn't mean the product is safe for the environment unless the manufacturer says how long it will take it to biodegrade. The sooner, the better. |
|
Chlorine-Free |
Contains no chlorine, a toxic chemical responsible for more household poisonings annually then any other and a cause of ozone depletion. | Opt for chlorine-free versions of all cleaners and stop cleaning with chlorine bleach, for your health and the environment's. |
|
Nontoxic |
Only a very large amount will cause damage. | Use of the term isn't regulated, so choose products from manufacturers that indicate in what way products are nontoxic ("non-toxic if inhaled," for example). |
|
Oxygenated |
Helps whiten and brighten by releasing oxygen, which breaks up stains and eliminates mildew. | Safer than chlorine bleach. Oxygenated products may not work as quickly as chlorine-based products, but they are effective when you follow label directions. |
|
Phosphate-Free |
Contains no phosphates (which increase a detergent's effectiveness). When phosphates enter waterways, they spur algae to overgrow, depleting oxygen and killing fish. | A meaningless marketing term. Phosphates are banned by law in all cleaning products except automatic dishwasher detergents. |
|
Surfactants |
The active cleaning agent in detergents. Conventional products often use petroleum-based surfactants. | Opt for surfactants described as plant-based; these are a better choice for the environment. |

OXY-BOOST Replaces Chlorine Bleach For Tropical Mold and Mildew Removal In Bermuda
As you might expect in tropical climates mold and mildew growth on roofs can really be a problem. The traditional method for removal is to use chlorine bleach. Besides being toxic, the bleach can also pollute the rain runoff water that is collected in barrels at the bottom of downspouts. In a recent test conducted in Bermuda, OXY-BOOST successfully removed mold and mildew without the toxic side effects that had been experienced with chlorine bleach. We hope that this can be a viable new market for OXY-BOOST!
ORANGE 100 can be used as a non-toxic insecticide and repellant. It is safe to use around children and food preparation areas. (Do not ingest, wash from skin.) The active ingredient d-Limonene destroys the protective wax coating on the insects' exoskeleton, causing them to suffocate and die on contact. ORANGE 100's citrus smell repels insects. It's been proven to work on ants, aphids, mealbugs, gnats, silverfish, roaches and fleas. Exposure shortens the effects of ORANGE 100 as a repellant. It works best to repel insects in cracks and crevices. If the insects return, find the source of the infestation and reapply ORANGE 100. ORANGE 100 can be safely applied to cabinets, window frames, pantries, doorways, garbage cans, cracks, crevices, pet bedding, around buildings, behind appliances, and on ant hills.
